"I do think a lot about music (pretty much constantly) but I often feel that spur-of-the-moment thoughts would be too random and erratic, unless that’s what we’re going for…"

Well, why not? It's a blog. For maximum interactivity and feedback, there's nothing like a good mix of real deliberate stuff and random, erratic, spur-of-the-moment thoughts. Have fun, think aloud, get a dynamite conversation going with fellow music lovers. What's not to like? :)

Not just you, Ben--those two instrumentals from "Tommy" are favorites of mine as well.

I used to do a late-night FM rock show back in the late 80's. The day the shuttle Challenger blew up, I decided to do an all-instrumental show that night as a memorial tribute. It was tough to fill three hours with instrumentals, but I did it, and the absence of vocals lent a kind of dignity to the show that I don't think it would have had otherwise.

You've hit the nail on the head, Ben. Is all popular music somehow "rock," making the name all but meaningless?

Maybe we should come up with a definition of rock, though even Nik Cohn can't do much better than "the very pulse of life itself," quoting Larry Williams....

The value of these questions is the way they lead to deeper, richer questions. And, occasionally, to answers. :)
